Waxing the floor long ago

Last night I dreamed I was walking in the financial district in sf with two small children. We came to a structure that doesn't really exist in real life. It was a a cross between a sprawling Asian temple with large outdoor expanses of wooden decks and a staid government building. I led the kids to it and explained to them that I had once, years ago, polished and waxed every inch of those floors and railings. I got down on my knees and ran my hand along the wood, and it was weather-worn, dull, and neglected. A fine, cool mist of sadness swept slowly through me.

This sounds like a really emotional dream. Maybe this dream has something to do with some generalized nostalgia for the past? It almost seems like the dream could be about something you put a lot of work into in the past (maybe something you thought would be there for future generations) only to discover your efforts weren't properly recognized or your work wasn't taken care of and now it's not there when you're ready for it.

It was very emotional. I'm still wondering what it meant. I think you're absolutely on the right path about the symbolism. I'm just not sure what the something from the past was/is. Thanks for your interpretation! I'll think on it. :-)
