happy with a dog

Last night I had a dream that I had a dog. It was small and fluffy. As soft as a rabbit and I was so content and filled with warmth just being with him. I was taking it a walk and it stayed at my side without a leash. At times it was like a small child and was holding my hand. The strange part is that I am not a dog person. I am pretty cautious of them and am really  fearful when I walk by and a dog barks and/or jump on me. In this dream I didn't feel any of that and I thought to myself how different the experience was to me. Eventually I went back to the place I had got the dog from and they said that I couldn't have one, but all three of the dogs that were left. I took them and I had help bringing them home but they eventually turned into children.

This is a pretty interesting dream, because on the one hand, it feels like it could be taken somewhat literally as a desire to have or protect children. I feel like one thing often gets substituted for another in a lot of dreams--like puppies standing in for children. I don't know why our minds do that; maybe to make it easier to deal with certain ideas? On the other hand, some people believe that there are universal symbols that we all share in our dreams, and that everything in a dream is metaphoric. I did a little poking around, and it looks like some people specifically say that being led by or walking around with a dog in a dream is a symbol of needing some direction about a big decision or problem in your life. I wonder if that would mean that three dogs would mean three problems? To me it maybe sounds like your dream was about a feeling of wanting to take care of some things/people/animals in your life that you feel may not be able to take care of themselves.

Dreams are funny. A lot of them come across as simple to decipher (like I immediately jumped to the conclusion that you were trying to overcome a fear of having or taking care of a child, Susan), but when you take into account any meaning assigned to symbols, they can take an interesting twist. (And on a complete side note, who decides those things anyway?) If Dave's interpretation is right and the dog does represent a big decision or problem, it could make a lot of sense for you -- big decisions/problems can be scary so a dog is a natural choice for someone who's a little leery of them! You can take comfort that you were able to overcome your fear in your dream, though :-)

Wow, Thank you for your feedback. I guess that I could say that all of these interpretations could apply. I am definitely coming up against some big issues this week. The idea of having children was even one of them. Fear all around has been felt but I am overcoming these emotions with lots of conversation. I do hope that this dream was an indication that I am facing these fears and being okay by feeling comfortable around the dog.
